Constructive feedback: what is it and how to give it

14 June 21

Whether you are a manager or just a fellow team member, you’ll likely need to know how to give constructive feedback in a workplace at some point in your career. However, it can be easier said than done. We will discuss some tips and tricks to help you give constructive feedback that will be both effective and respectful.

What is constructive feedback?

Constructive feedback is considered supportive feedback that addresses specific issues or concerns. When giving constructive feedback to an individual, the goal is to provide individuals with solutions to any areas of weaknesses that they may have.

How to give constructive feedback

Oftentimes, when feedback is given in a wrong way, people can feel like they’re being attacked. This is what we want to avoid and here’s how:

Balance the positive and the negative

Even if the feedback you want to give is ultimately negative, make sure to balance it out with something positive as well. This could be, for example, mentioning that you were impressed by their work in the past, which is why you believe it could be improved.

Don’t make assumptions

Present an issue to the individual and give them a chance to explain rather than making your own assumptions or interpretations.

Focus on things that can be changed

Give feedback on things that could be improved by the person. If it can’t be changed and it’s out of their hands, there’s no need to mention it.

Provide solutions

Most importantly, make sure to provide recommendations or solutions to the individual getting the feedback. This is the key to effective constructive feedback. For example, instead of saying “your recent project didn’t bring much value”, explain why the project didn’t bring value and suggest some material they could read or listen to that might help them improve.
