Bill Gates Predicts Business Travel Will Decrease By 50% Post COVID-19

14 December 20

COVID-19 has without a doubt brought a change to the way we work. So many companies have switched to the work-from-home model during the pandemic, while some, including Microsoft, are already thinking about incorporating this model in the future as well. However, working from home is not the only change the pandemic has brought.

According to the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, business travel will decrease by 50% even after the pandemic. “We will continue to do business trips, but much less,” said the billionaire. He believes that companies will be rethinking whether or not to take a business trip “just to discuss things”. Therefore, travelling for business will be less common and it’s likely we will be turning to video calls more often.

Gates also predicted that 30% of office life will disappear after the pandemic. Which is very much likely, as we have already seen various companies announcing that they plan to incorporate this model in the future. Back in October, Microsoft announced that employees will be able to work from home permanently for at least 50% of their working hours. Facebook mentioned that they are planning on shifting certain jobs to remote positions permanently. Meanwhile, Germany has drafted a law stating that employees should be able to work remotely for 24 days per year. On the other hand, some companies aren’t as excited about remote work, such as Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings, who does not see any benefits of this work model

As these are just Gates’ assumptions about the future, nobody can know for sure how work life after the pandemic will look. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
