Airbnb Reveals COVID-19’s Impact On Their Revenue

17 December 20

It’s no surprise that due to the ongoing pandemic travel has drastically decreased and therefore impacted the business of Airbnb. Wondering how much of an impact it had exactly? Airbnb has just revealed that their revenue declined by 72% amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Not to mention, the company has filed for an initial public offering. Here’s what the IPO filing revealed.

COVID-19 had a massive effect

The filing revealed that revenue has massively dropped for the company since last year. During the fourth quarter of 2019, Airbnb had $1.11 billion in revenue. By the second quarter of 2020, this revenue has dropped to $334.78 million, which is 72% down year-over-year. Not to mention, less bookings and more cancellations lead to $575.6 million in losses in the second quarter of 2020, compared to a loss of $297.4 million the same time last year.

While COVID-19 did have a massive effect on the company, it’s important to point out they were still a long way from becoming consistently profitable even before the pandemic hit. In 2018, the company lost $16.9 million, following a $674.33 million loss in 2019. It is still not sure how big of a loss Airbnb will have this year, however they have already reached a loss of $696.9 million in the first nine months.

“While we have enacted measures to reduce our expenses, we expect to incur a significant net loss for 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the company said in the filing.

As for the future of Airbnb, in the filing the company said they’re planning to focus more on domestic travel, as people are looking for trips closer to their homes and longer-term stays.
