How To Prepare For a Virtual Job Interview

23 November 20

As many businesses are reopening and hiring again, virtual job interviews have become the new normal. While they are still similar to in-person interviews, there are quite a few differences to keep in mind when trying to impress your future employee virtually. Here are five tips to help you master your online interview:

1. Test your technology

Unlike an in-person interview where you only need to bring yourself, virtual interviews usually require additional things, such as a camera, a microphone, and possibly even a special interview platform or program. Don’t wait until the last minute, download the interview platform beforehand, check your internet connection, and make sure your camera and microphone are working.

2. Set the scene

Your background is important. Find a room with good lighting, possibly a blank wall, and minimal distractions. Also, make sure to tidy up – you want all focus to be on you.

3. Dress up

While it can be tempting to hang out in your sweatpants all day, make sure you dress up as you would for an in-person interview. This way, you’ll look more component and professional to your potential employer.

4. Monitor your body language

Unfortunately, giving a firm handshake to your employer isn’t an option in a virtual interview. Instead, show them how confident you are through your body language. Sit up straight, smile, and maintain eye contact through the camera.

5. Practice answers to common interview questions

Just like any interview, you will be asked all the basic questions any potential employer would ask you – virtual interview or not. Prepare yourself to ensure you look your best.

Ultimately, the key to mastering a virtual interview is preparation. From your technology to answers to questions – make sure you are prepared to increase your chances of getting the job.
