France Aims To Ban Short Flights

6 May 21

Aiming to reduce carbon emissions, French lawmakers have moved to ban short-haul domestic flights.

The plan is to discontinue any internal flights where the journey could be made by train instead in under two-and-a-half hours. Connecting flights would not be affected. The new rule is said to capture around 12% of France’s domestic flights.

However, this was not the initial proposal. Apparently, the original plan was to ban all flights that could be made in under four hours. Even though it did not go through, this proposal to ban flights that could be made in under two-and-a-half hours is still the first time any major economy has prohibited domestic air travel for environmental reasons.

“On average, the plane emits 77 times more CO2 per passenger than the train on these routes, even though the train is cheaper and the time lost is limited to 40 minutes,” the French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir said.

While French lawmakers have already voted in favor to ban short-haul domestic flights, another vote in the Senate will still have to take place before becoming the law. Nevertheless, this law will surely be watched closely by other countries and they may just follow in France’s footsteps.

This ban is an important step towards accepting that in order to reduce emissions, it’s essential to reduce consumption.
