Coca-Cola Unveils Its New Sustainable Paper Bottles

15 March 21

Brands all around the globe have been looking for ways to make their businesses more sustainable. Coca-Cola is one of them too.

After being discovered as the most polluting brand multiple years in a row, the iconic company started looking into ways to reduce plastic. They just recently unveiled that they will be testing paper bottles.

“Our vision is to create a paper bottle that can be recycled like any other type of paper, and this prototype is the first step on the way to achieving this,” says Stijn Franssen, R&D packaging innovation manager, Coca-Cola EMEA. “A paper bottle opens up a whole new world of packaging possibilities, and we are convinced that paper packaging has a role to play in the future.”

The sustainable bottles were designed in partnership with Danish company Paboco, also known as the Paper Bottle Company. However, creating the perfect alternative for plastic bottles surely came with challenges. For example, they had to create such a structure that would be suitable for fizzy drinks, as these drinks should be bottled under pressure.

The first paper Coca-Cola bottles will be tested as soon as this summer in Hungary to sell the brand’s fruit drink called Adez. They plan to sell 2,000 bottles in a local retail chain to see how it performs and how people respond to the new packaging. Following the trial, Coca-Cola, Paboco, and other companies will seek ways to improve these bottles even more.
