Apple Wants to Replace Paper Passports

13 May 21

New things are coming to the digital world and they’re pretty exciting. Thanks to Apple, we may just be able to forget paper IDs soon and replace them with digital ones.

The tech giant has already filed numerous patents on related issues, such as how to request ID data from the iPhone. Now, their most recent patent focuses on authenticating that the person holding an iPhone with a digital ID is the real owner.

The patent defines various security key and authentication combinations in which both the user and the official’s identity is checked.

“[This patent application] describes embodiments in which a person may present identification information through a mobile device instead of presenting a traditional form of identification,” says Apple. “[It] begins with a discussion about storing identification information (e.g., of a passport, driver license, government-issued ID, student ID, etc.) on a mobile device… [And] then describes an authentication framework for performing a user authentication at the mobile device.”

Sounds pretty interesting, huh? Nothing is final yet, but Apple surely seems committed to making paper IDs a thing of the past. After all, the company has already managed to replace everything from wallets to compact mirrors – and next in line are paper IDs.
