Amazon Will Let You Pay With Your Hands

7 December 20

Amazon is introducing a new way to pay for products inside the company’s physical retail stores –  with your hands. Using its own palm recognition technology, Amazon One scans the palm of your hand identifying details such as lines, ridges, and vein patterns. The combination of these details is your “palm signature”, turning your hand into a personal credit card!

Amazon has already launched this new feature at two of their Amazon Go stores in Seattle, Washington and plan to launch in other Amazon stores as well. But they have even bigger plans for the future: “We believe Amazon One has broad applicability beyond our retail stores, so we also plan to offer the service to third parties like retailers, stadiums, and office buildings so that more people can benefit from this ease and convenience in more places,” says Dilip Kumar, vice president of Amazon’s physical retail business.

You may be wondering why Amazon chose to have palm recognition rather than other technologies, such as face recognition. “One reason was that palm recognition is considered more private than some biometric alternatives because you can’t determine a person’s identity by looking at an image of their palm,” explains Kumar. “It also requires someone to make an intentional gesture by holding their palm over the device to use.” Amazon One users will also be able to delete their biometric data from the company’s online portal whenever they want.

What do you think, could this be the future of retail payments? We’ll just have to wait and see!
