Uber Pledges To Have Only Electric Vehicles By 2040

24 September 20

Uber is committed to becoming fully zero-emission by 2040 and is spending $800 million through 2025 to help drivers make the switch. How exactly will Uber be helping drivers switch to battery-powered vehicles? By offering vehicle discounts from their partners, including General Motors and the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi alliance, along with discounts for charging and beyond.

Riders who choose to take a green trip will pay an extra $1 surcharge, which will help Uber with fully switching to electric vehicles. These riders will also be rewarded three times more points than if they were to choose a trip with a gasoline-powered car. Meanwhile, drivers with electric vehicles will each get a dollar from Uber itself for every “green trip” completed. Not to mention, drivers who go green will also get an additional 50 cents per trip completed in the US or Canada, resulting in a total of $1.50 extra per each green trip completed.

Uber believes that all vehicles on its platform in the United States, Canada, and Europe will be zero-emission by 2030 and the rest of the vehicles on the platform – by 2040. The company’s goal is to ultimately reduce the cost of electric vehicles, as they are currently more expensive than gasoline cars. Surely, climate change organisations are pleased by this announcement, and hopefully, Uber will inspire other companies to take new steps towards helping the planet as well.
