Maldives Is Building a Floating City to Cope With Rising Sea Levels

4 July 22

Waterstudio.NL, a Netherlands-based architecture, urban planning, and research firm, is building a so-called island city in collaboration with the Dutch Docklands and the Government of The Maldives. The idea behind the Maldives Floating City (MFC) is to provide a housing solution, while coping with rising sea levels and global temperature increases.

The Maldives Floating City will offer a lagoon of over 200 ha (more than 500 acres). The plan is to accommodate a total of 12,000 people. However, it will not just be a residential community. The island will also feature shops, hotels, restaurants, and more.

“Maldives Floating City is based on the local culture of this sea-farers nation,” states the MFC official website. “Maldivians have a strong relation with the sea, so living on water is aligned with their culture and history.” Therefore, the city will be limited by means of logistics. It will be like a boating community, with loads of canals as the main infrastructure for logistics. Land-based movement will be limited to walking, riding bicycles, or using electric noise-free buggies/scooters. Cars will not be allowed.

The floating city will be designed with the ecosystem in mind, enhancing coral growth by attaching artificial coral banks to the city’s underside. The development technologies are sustainable and adaptable to weather and climate change. The coral reef will serve as a natural wave breaker, providing safety from the elements to the city’s inhabitants.

The MFC would be the first habitable structure of this kind and size, housing the infrastructure which is both sustainable and commercially viable. Such a structure will make Maldivians more prepared than ever to combat natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and flooding.
