Google Claims It Will Stop Using Cookies

1 April 21

Google has announced that their use of third-party cookies is coming to an end. The company plans to end support for cookies in Chrome by early 2022.

Cookies are huge in the digital advertising industry. Basically, they are used to track your activity online and store your data. This is done both to improve your experience on a website as well as send you targeted ads. How exactly is this data about you collected, though? Well, it’s based on the websites you visit. This information helps build a profile of you and your interests, which is then used to send you targeted ads.

Now that Google will stop using cookies, ad companies will have to find a new way to target users. And while this does represent a huge change for the ad business, it still doesn’t mean Google will stop collecting your data.

Until Google ends support for cookies in Chrome by early 2022, the company will be trying to figure out how to address the needs of users and advertisers and come up with new tools. To do so, they’ve launched the “Privacy Sandbox” back in August 2019. According to David Temkin, Google’s director of product management, ads privacy and trust, “Privacy Sandbox” will be used to “build innovations that protect anonymity while still delivering results for advertisers and publishers”.

“Keeping the internet open and accessible for everyone requires all of us to do more to protect privacy — and that means an end to not only third-party cookies but also any technology used for tracking individual people as they browse the web,” Temkin said. “We remain committed to preserving a vibrant and open ecosystem where people can access a broad range of ad-supported content with confidence that their privacy and choices are respected.”
