Geneva Introduces Highest Minimum Wage in the World at 21.50€ an Hour

5 November 20

The canton of Geneva, Switzerland just introduced a minimum wage of 23 Swiss francs (21.50€) an hour, being the highest minimum wage in the world.

Increasing the minimum wage had been proposed by local union and leftwing parties a total of three times now – in 2011, 2014, and 2020. After being rejected two times, this time around just over 58% of the canton’s 500,000 voters voted for the change. They were asked to answer yes or no to the following question: “Do you accept the popular initiative ’23 francs is a minimum’?”.

This vote is expected to directly benefit around 30,000 low-paid workers. According to Michel Charrat, president of the Groupement transfrontalier européen, an organisation supporting those commuting between Geneva and nearby France, the vote is a “mark of solidarity” with the city’s poor. Charrat told The Guardian that the coronavirus pandemic “has shown that a certain section of the Swiss population cannot live in Geneva”. He also stated that this new minimum wage is “the minimum to not fall below the poverty line and find yourself in a very difficult situation.”

The new minimum wage is going into effect on November 1st. All Geneva-based workers will be earning at least 23 Swiss francs or 21.50€ an hour, meaning full-time workers will earn at least 45,264 Swiss francs a year or 42,324 Euros.
