Teslas Will Soon Talk To Pedestrians, Says Elon Musk

17 February 20

While noiseless electric cars may seem cool and all, the whole concept isn’t very safe for pedestrians. To comply with safety regulations that require electric cars to produce some kind of artificial noise, Tesla is placing external speakers on its cars – but not just any kind of speakers. Tesla has taken this whole artificial noise thing to the next level and, apparently, its cars will be able to talk to nearby pedestrians!

Just recently, CEO Elon Musk shared a clip of a Model 3 Tesla driving with the external speaker saying: “Well don’t just stand there staring, hop in.” Musk tweeted, “Teslas will soon talk to people if you want. This is real.” How cool is that?! The CEO also mentioned that this new feature might be used to scare off potential thieves. Or just make farting noises.

But what we can’t help but think about is that this may be the beginning of an autonomous taxi. Just think about it – owners send off their self-driving, self-speaking cars to earn money for them, while they just chill at home! You have got to love technology.

So, when are these talking Teslas actually going to be on the streets? Well, according to Musk’s tweet – “soon”. How soon is soon exactly? Only Musk knows the answer to that. The CEO has previously promised “customized horn and movement sounds” back in October as well as an autonomous Tesla journey from Los Angeles to New York back in 2016 (the plans were then put on hold until 2018). Both of which were promised “soon”, however, neither of which have actually happened yet. So, to answer your question of how soon is soon, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
