Elon Musk Claims He Will Link The Human Brain With A Computer In 2020

31 July 19

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk just revealed that his startup Neuralink is planning to link human brains with the Internet in 2020.

During a live-streamed presentation, he explained that this would be done by implanting a tiny chip, known as a brain-machine, into the brain, as well as drilling extremely fine “threads” covered in electrodes next to neurons. Sounds painful? Actually, it’s not! The procedure is stated to be painless and as easy as LASIK eye surgery.

Once the “threads” are drilled and the chip is implanted, it is connected to external devices, such as phones or computers, and can start working by stimulating the brain’s neurons. The idea is that you would be able to control a computer with your mind. For example, patients would be able to put words into a text or email simply by thinking them. One day, it may even be possible to “download” a language! Pretty crazy, huh?!

This chip could be used to treat brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s Disease or Parkinson’s. It could also help “preserve and enhance” brain function.

And if you’re wondering if it will actually work, apparently, it already does. This procedure has already been tested on rats and monkeys and their brains were successfully linked to computers. So now, the next step is to do it with the human brain and this may happen sooner than you think. Musk revealed that they are planning to have their first human patient by the end of next year.
