Apple AirTags: What Are They And How Do They Work?

29 April 21

Ever lost your keys or wallet and wished you could use the “Find My iPhone” feature to locate them? Well, now you can!

Apple just announced a new device that they’ll be launching, and it’s called an AirTag. The Bluetooth-based device is a small, button-sized tracker that can be attached to any item. AirTags connect to your iOS and macOS devices over Bluetooth. You can then keep track of where your items are using Apple’s Find My network. There are also in-built speakers that can play a sound to find the AirTags in, for example, your house.

What about privacy and security?

Naturally, you may be thinking, these tags could be used to track people for malicious purposes as well. Well, actually, it seems Apple has thought this through.

First of all, each AirTag is linked to your Apple ID, so you are the only one who can track it. Location data and history also aren’t stored.

As for unwanted tracking, if someone else were to, for example, put an AirTag in your handbag to track you, you would soon get an alert to your phone that an AirTag has been detected near you. AirTag Detected alerts are triggered when the owner is separated from the AirTag.

When will they be available?

AirTags are available for preorder now and will officially launch on April 30th. A single AirTag is priced at around €35, while a pack of four costs €119.
