AirAsia launches facial recognition technology

6 December 21

Living in a pandemic world has led to various changes in our everyday lives. From paying with credit cards rather than cash to switching to a remote working model – companies all around the globe have been exploring contactless solutions every day. One of these solutions just showed up at AirAsia.

AirAsia Super App has just launched FACES, which is a facial recognition technology that identifies customers via instant facial recognition.

The idea is to allow passengers to book their flight, check-in, and board planes at the airport with their faces. This way, fewer staff services with humans will be needed, and therefore, there will be less human-to-human contact.

But this technology doesn’t just stop at booking tickets, checking in, and boarding planes. It can also be used to pay for products and services available on the app, such as food orders and deliveries.

“All AirAsia Super App users in the region can now register for FACES easily on the app, and soon they will be able to use the feature not just for travel but also for all of our lifestyle offerings in our rapidly expanding ecosystem,” says AirAsia Super App chief executive officer Amanda Woo.

The app is currently being rolled out in airports across Malaysia.

“One of the initiatives we are working with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is to upgrade and enable its usage in the baggage drop areas,” says AirAsia’s chief product & technology officer Pablo Sanz Salcedo. “Using FACES, the technology will validate who you are and allows you to drop your bag faster, more convenient, and seamless without having any personnel there.”

The goal is to have FACES available in at least 150 airports by 2023.
