5 Tips On How To Disagree With Your Boss

10 August 21

It’s nearly impossible to agree 100% of the time with someone’s perspective, ideas, or insights – especially at work. Managers want to believe that the people they hire can think and act on behalf of their company, even if that includes speaking up when something’s off.

So, that little voice in your head saying, “you have to like everything your boss likes or else you’ll get fired,” ignore it. You disagreeing with your boss is a win-win situation for both.

Here are five tips to make any disagreement a win-win situation for your career and your boss’s reputation.

1. Leave emotions out of the conversation

Keep your emotions in check when expressing your disagreement. Nobody enjoys hearing someone shout their rebuttal, let alone when it’s paired with flapping arms and turning red. The other person will most probably mirror your energy level. Stay calm, breathe, and speak slowly.

2. Be clear on what exactly you disagree with

The last thing you want to do is articulate your ideas in a disorderly manner. Not only will this leave a bad impression, but the problem (if any) also won’t be solved. So, before you open up, think about how you will communicate it in words.

3. Have evidence to back up your claims

What’s the point of disagreeing if you can’t offer an alternative solution? If you don’t like an idea, be sure to come up with something else. Always approach the situation with one or more ways to solve the problem.

4. Keep it private

Depending on the situation and disagreement, you and your boss may need to take it somewhere more private. This will take away any distraction and give the both of you a chance to cover what’s needed. Plus, the rest of the office won’t even know what happened.

5. Accept and commit

Once you’ve taken each step above and still disagree, it’s time to accept it and move forward. Not only does that show you are a professional, but it also signifies that you can work through this disagreement. In the end, the idea or solution may end up working out well.

Disagreeing is not a bad habit. Of course, going overboard isn’t the right solution either. However, it may come up once in a while and when it does, remember that disagreeing is part of the process.  Learning to give and receive feedback properly is key to a successful discussion.
