Cyberattacks Are On The Rise

8 июля 21

Ever since we started working from home, the number of cyberattacks has been on the rise. A recent study found that the number of companies being targeted by cybercriminals has increased from 38% to 43% in the past year. Over a quarter of the targeted companies (28%) experienced five attacks or more.

Why have cyberattacks increased?

Well, desperate times, a.k.a. COVID-19, open up various doors for hackers.

  1. It’s easier for hackers to exploit the vulnerability of employees working from home.
  2. COVID-19 news is on everyone’s radar. Therefore, hackers can create malicious fake coronavirus-related websites, which will likely be a success.
  3. Studies have shown that in unknown times, people are more likely to make irrational decisions, e.g., fall for phishing scams.

The truth is, lots of opportunities have arisen for hackers during the COVID-19 outbreak.

How do you protect yourself from a cyberattack?

  1. Keep your software up-to-date. Outdated software is a way in for hackers, so make sure it’s always up-to-date.
  2. Back up your files. Better safe than sorry. Always make sure you have your files backed up somewhere in case of a cyberattack.
  3. Use strong passwords. Don’t underestimate the power of a strong password. Make sure your passwords contain at least 12 characters, including letters, numbers, and special symbols.
  4. Use multifactor identification. Multifactor identification adds an additional layer of security to your accounts. This way, when logging into your account, you’ll be required to enter not only your password but also a one-time code sent to your phone.
  5. Don’t click on suspicious links or attachments. Beware of suspiciously urgent emails or messages containing links or attachments. Just one click could lead to an attack, so make sure you’re only opening files from trusted senders.
  6. Use a VPN. A virtual private network can help protect against online threats. It provides you with privacy and anonymity by encrypting your data and sending it through a special VPN server rather than the open web.
