Microsoft Will Let Employees Work From Home Permanently

12 November 20

Microsoft recently announced that it will be allowing employees to work from home permanently. While it is true that currently, the vast majority of employees are already working from home due to the ongoing pandemic, the company plans to offer more flexible working plans for the future.

According to The Verge, employees will now have the option to work from home for less than 50% of their working week or have managers approve permanent working hours. This means that employees will give up their assigned office spaces, but will still have access to touchdown areas. Microsoft will cover home office expenses for permanent remote employees.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all of us to think, live, and work in new ways,” says Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft’s chief people officer, in a note to employees. “We will offer as much flexibility as possible to support individual work styles while balancing business needs, and ensuring we live our culture.”

Employees will also be allowed to relocate and move cross country for remote work with approval from managers. However, those who decide to move cross country will have to cover their own relocation expenses.

While most employees will be able to enjoy the work from home option, some roles will still require employees to be in the office. These include in-person training or roles requiring access to hardware labs or data centers.

Microsoft is not the only company embracing permanent remote work. Companies, such as Twitter and Square, will also allow employees to work remotely indefinitely. Meanwhile, Facebook is predicting that 50% of its employees will continue to work full-time remotely.
