The Future of Europe’s EV Charging Grid

The age of the internal combustion engine in personal and commercial vehicles is coming to an end. EV manufacturers like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid Motors are the forefront of the electric revolution making a notable push towards a world without the internal combustion engine. Governments around the globe keep pushing more stringent regulations on all car manufacturers, in turn shifting the focus of the traditional car companies towards EVs.
By 2035 the sale of new vehicles that emit CO2 will be banned in Europe. With the deadline approaching fast there are quite a few questions that are left unanswered. One of the main ones on the consumer’s end is the charging of said vehicles.
If you own an EV and reside for example in the Netherlands, a country with the highest density of EV charging stations in the world, it is more than likely that you have been in situations where you could not charge your car due to faulty chargers, lack of a universal payment method, or simply the lack of unoccupied charging stations.
The rise of EVs gave birth to a new term – range anxiety. What it basically means is that people who use EVs are constantly thinking about where, how, and how long they are going to need to charge their cars to reach their destination.
The European parliament is already adopting targets for the EV charging grids in their member countries. On October 19th 2022, have set minimum requirements for EV charging that the member countries need to meet by 2026.
One of the requirements is to have a charging post at least every 60 km along the motorways. The proposal for not meeting this requirement is to charge the EU country €1,000 for every lacking charging station.
There are concerns that such measures are not sufficient. Especially keeping in mind that by the end of 2021 Europe only had 5.6 million registered plug-in EV cars that accounts for only 2.2% of cars currently registered in Europe. To reach the ultimate goal of having only EVs on the European roads the charging grid would need to explode in size.
