How To Become a Full-Time Freelancer

11 February 20

Freelancing is becoming more and more popular every day. From not having to leave the house to being your own boss – the benefits it offers are quite desirous.

If you want to leave your day job to become a full-time freelance, good news – it’s more than possible! However, you will need some pointers before getting started:

Build a Portfolio

You have to prove yourself professionally for future clients to gain your trust. Include all of your best work and showcase your talent proudly. If you don’t have anything to showcase yet, you may want to consider doing some jobs for free when just getting started.

Market Yourself

While it would be great if clients just magically appeared – that’s never going to happen. Market your work on various freelancing websites, where companies and individuals come when in need of a freelancer. Also consider social media, such as Instagram, especially if you’re a photographer or designer.

Know Your Value

Do your research. Look into the standard rates in the market and decide your fees accordingly. Whether you will be charging per hour or project – you have to know your rate and be ready to answer that million-dollar question to your client.

How much will I need to spend?

It all depends on what your job is. For a writer, you’ll probably only need a computer and an internet connection. For a photographer, you’ll need all the basic equipment, such as a camera, a gimbal, a tripod, etc.

Also, if you decide to create your own website, you should take into account those costs as well. Not to mention, many freelancing websites charge a monthly fee for showcasing your portfolio.

Basically, there is no magic number of how much you will need to spend. It all depends on your job, what equipment you already have and how you plan on marketing yourself.

What challenges will I face?

While freelancing has plenty of benefits, it has challenges as well. These include but are not limited to: not getting paid on time, having to chase down clients, dealing with needy clients, having to complete jobs with very little information from clients, etc.

To make your new freelancing venture as smooth as possible, make sure you have binding agreements to secure yourself legally.
