World’s First 3D-Printed Unibody Electric Bike

16 July 20

While carbon fiber e-bikes, custom bikes, and 3D-printed bikes are nothing new, startup Superstrata is the first to put all these together in their new 3D-printed unibody electric bike.

Created under Arevo’s new Superstrata brand, these bikes are a bit more costly, but very much worth it if you’re looking for a custom bike. While 3D-printing can be expensive, according to Superstrata’s CEO Sonny Vu, it offers a much more durable bike frame that could be made in nearly 10 hours and customizable design. Customers can simply send in their measurements, and Superstrata will 3D-print the bike to a custom fit. The Silicon Valley-based company claims that it can print up to 250,000 different combinations.

How much will these bikes cost, you ask? Well, carbon fiber bikes usually cost around $4,000 to $12,000 because they are made out of dozens of pieces. Superstrata’s prices, however, will start at $2,799. They’ll offer two different bikes – the Terra ($2,799) and the Ion ($3,999). The Terra is a lightweight, non-electric bike that can be customized for different riding styles and the Ion is an electric bike with a 250W motor and 252Wh battery hidden in the frame.

If these bikes are a success, it’s expected that 3D-printing could become an accepted manufacturing process in the industry and Superstrata could become a major supplier. Only time will tell!
