Google Maps Now Shows Where COVID-19 Is Spiking

19 October 20

Google Maps is now offering a new feature that will, as they say, help you “navigate safely”. This feature is an overlay of COVID-19 case trends.

According to Sujoy Banerjee, a Google Maps product manager, the feature was designed to help people “make more informed decisions about where to go and what to do”. So now, when you open up a map, you will have the option of seeing a 7-day average of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people for the area of the map you are looking at. The areas will be color-coded to help you easily distinguish the density of new cases in the area, and there will also be a label informing whether the cases are trending up or down.

Google gathers this data from various reliable sources, such as Johns Hopkins, the New York Times, and Wikipedia. “These sources get data from public health organizations like the World Health Organization, government health ministries, along with state and local health agencies and hospitals,” reads Google’s blog.

The COVID-19 overlay is visible for all countries and territories supported by Google Maps. To view it, simply open up Google Maps on Android or iOS, and on the top right-hand corner of the screen where you can choose your map type, click COVID-19 info.
